Engineer / Scientist (pre‑register)

About the role

The European Patent Office (EPO) is seeking engineers and scientists who are ready to join a future recruitment round (planned for autumn 2026). Candidates will work at the forefront of innovation, evaluating inventions before they reach the market and contributing to the Office’s mission of scientific excellence, fairness and sustainability.

Key responsibilities

• Perform deep technical analysis of inventions across a wide range of fields.
• Apply structured thinking to solve complex intellectual puzzles.
• Assess patentability and provide clear, reasoned evaluations as a Patent Examiner.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in one of the EPO duty stations (Munich, The Hague, Vienna or Berlin).

Required profile

• Master’s degree or PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant technical discipline.
• Excellent command (C1 level) of at least one official EPO language (English, French or German) and ability to understand the other two, or C1 English with a commitment to reach B2 in the missing languages.
• Citizenship of a member state of the European Patent Organisation.
