About the role
As a Patent Examiner at the European Patent Office you will evaluate patent applications across a wide range of cutting‑edge technologies, ensuring that inventions meet the criteria for protection under the European Patent Convention.
Key responsibilities
- Examine patent applications, including technical documentation and drawings, in English, French or German.
- Analyse new inventions to assess novelty and inventive step.
- Conduct in‑depth research using digital search tools, scientific databases and patent information sources.
- Apply legal and procedural frameworks to make clear, high‑quality decisions on grantability.
- Communicate findings constructively with applicants and other parties.
- Collaborate with international colleagues in a diverse and inclusive environment.
Required profile
- Solid background in one or more of the listed technical fields (e.g., AI, quantum computing, ICT security, power systems, electromechanics, video engineering, semiconductor manufacturing, telecom).
- Enjoy deep technical analysis, reading technical drawings and solving intellectual puzzles.
- Curious about emerging technologies and committed to continuous learning.
- Analytical, detail‑oriented and open‑minded.
- Confident using digital and AI‑supported tools for information analysis.
- Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
Required skills
- Expertise in at least one of the specified technical areas (e.g., artificial intelligence, machine learning, quantum computing, ICT security, cryptography, power conversion, HVDC, energy storage, electrical connector design, digital video coding, semiconductor manufacturing, telecom network management).
- Excellent knowledge (C1) of an official language (English, French or German) and ability to understand the other two, or willingness to reach B2 level.
- Master’s level education in a relevant technical field.
